MapRun is a free smartphone app designed for virtual orienteering. It is easy to use and loads of fun. It replaces physical timing equipment and control flags with GPS-based "virtual controls". You can navigate the course using either the map displayed on your smartphone or a printed copy. When you reach the location of a virtual control marked on the map, your device will beep/vibrate to notify you and automatically register your visit.
When you have finished the course, the app will upload your results and GPS route so you can immediately see how you went and compare with others on the same course. There is also a MapRun app for Garmin & Apple smartwatchs, which eliminates the need to carry your phone with you while on the course.
